Flow Arts and Mental Health Awareness Month

       May is #MentalHealthAwareness Month and we think that mental health has intricately played a role in flow arts. Flow arts are viewed as an escape and outlet for many people. The community is a place for people to seek out other like-minded individuals with the same love for flow arts and a safe space to be themselves. 

        In 2017, the CDC reported that 47,000 Americans committed suicide. That was the highest statistics for suicides in half a century. In the United States alone, at least half of adults will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. With these kinds of numbers, it’s safe to say that depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses are a part of everyone's life at one point or another. How do people find help? How do people deal with these thoughts? Some find try to heal themselves through therapy, drugs, exercise, eating, sex, and other outlets. Art can be one of those outlets that’s proven to be good for you.
        Dancing can be a great way to express oneself when you can’t find the words to speak how you are feeling. It can help people process through difficult times. Moving in a creative way such as flows arts, can help release chemicals in the brain that make us feel good. Getting lost in the art of gloving, orbiting, hooping, or poi spinning can help people take themselves out of a bad headspace. When you are concentrating so hard using flow toys to move with precision and flow, you don’t have time to think about the things that are weighing you down. On the other hand, it can also help give you perspective and take a clear look at yourself to help process everything you are going through. This is because flow arts can be meditative in their nature. Flow arts literally teach you to flow through your problems, making you calmer about your situation. It can also be a great way to build self confidence. Flow arts builds strength and agility through these movements. When you start to master whatever art you are interested in, you can feel a sense of accomplishment. Creatively moving is just one way that can help someone who is going through a difficult time.
        Community is a pivotal part of flow arts. The flow arts community is built on relationships. They are places people can go to truly be themselves without having fear judgment. There are flow festivals around the world where people can gather to learn, teach, compete, and bond. People escape their thoughts and struggles together by bonding over flow arts together. In a way, it’s almost like group therapy where everyone can work on themselves together. You can get to know each other on an artistic and emotional level.
        Flow arts is about community and finding joy through creative movement. If you’re struggling to find happiness or are going through a difficult time, consider taking up flow arts as a way to deal with everything.
